Direct answer
A brief bedtime journal may help if your mind is busy planning tomorrow. The clearest study tested a five-minute to-do list, not journaling in general, and it was limited to one night in healthy young adults.
What the studies found
In a sleep-lab study of 57 healthy adults aged 18 to 30, people who wrote a to-do list for five minutes before lights-out took an average of 15.82 minutes to fall asleep. Those who wrote about completed tasks averaged 25.09 minutes.
A separate 42-person pilot study of poor sleepers found that writing about worries and concerns for three nights was linked with shorter self-reported time to fall asleep than doing no writing.
A five-minute journaling approach to try
For people whose thoughts keep returning to tomorrow’s tasks, try spending five minutes listing what needs doing in the next few days before lights-out. This is the version tested in the sleep-lab study.
Keep the experiment simple: use the routine for yourself and notice whether it feels useful, without expecting a guaranteed result.
Why detailed lists may help
In the to-do-list study, participants who made more specific, detailed lists fell asleep faster than those who wrote vague lists.
That makes a concrete list a closer match to the available evidence than a general reflection on the day.
Limits of the evidence
The sleep-lab result came from one night, one lab, and healthy young adults without a sleep problem. It has not been shown to last over weeks or apply to insomnia.
The worry-writing result was a pilot study and relied on participants’ own sleep reports, so it points to potential rather than establishing that the practice works.
When persistent sleep problems warrant professional support
If trouble sleeping persists or feels hard to manage, consider discussing it with a qualified health professional. This is general wellness information, not medical advice.
