What changed
Based on BBC News reporting, Wellbeing Square has officially opened in Newhaven after a £21m transformation of empty and under-used buildings. Lewes District Council led the project, which puts two GP practices, a pharmacy, wellbeing services, an expanded Seahaven Swim & Fitness Centre and creative/co-working space on one site.
The two GP surgeries are set to serve more than 15,000 residents and offer more than 5,500 appointments a month.
Why This Matters
Our view: the useful change is not the shiny new building. It is the chance to make a healthy routine feel less like another errand. A GP appointment, prescription collection and a visit to the fitness centre can now begin from the same place.
That matters because wellness advice is easiest to use when it fits ordinary life. The hub does not promise that a swim, walk or class will solve a health problem, and it should not replace medical advice. But putting leisure and support close to primary care may lower the small practical barriers that often stop good intentions becoming habits: an extra journey, a separate booking, the feeling that wellbeing is somehow not “for people like me.”
The real test is whether convenience becomes routine. Talk to a doctor about personal health concerns; this is general wellness, not medical advice.
What to watch next
- Whether both GP practices are operating fully at Wellbeing Square and maintaining their appointment offer. If they are, the site becomes a genuine local access point rather than a partly finished promise.
- Whether the pharmacy, wellbeing services and expanded fitness centre are all open and used together. Broad use would support the idea that co-location can make healthy choices easier to act on.
- Whether NHS Sussex and Surrey documents easier or more convenient access for residents over the next six to 12 months. That would be the clearest sign that the hub is doing more than sharing an address.
